POBLACIONES EN CAPADOCIA

El Profesor Ekrem Akurgal en su "Die Kunst der Hititer", indica que la civilización y la vida tranquila de Anatolia fueron violentamente interrumpidas y exterminadas con la invasión en el 2000 A. C. por una raza cruel procedente del norte. Las excavaciones revelan que las muestras de la cultura hitita están cubiertas por las cenizas de un gran incendio. Durante mucho tiempo no hubo señales de vida en Anatolia. La raza que se sobrepuso a los hititas arraso toda la región y masacro a su población. La destrucción completa fue tal que 800 años después, ni Herodoto (484-424) menciona a los hititas. Los expertos sospechan que fueron los frigios quienes destruyeron este imperio.

Entre los restos de los estratos de esta edad en Hattushah (Alacahoyuk, Bogazkoy) se encuentran las huellas de un incendio. Huellas de incendios similares se observan también en otras ciudades de la época, como Karaoglan, Dundartepe y Karahoyuk en Konya. De estos restos se desprende el razonamiento de que la invasión mencionada se extendía sobre la totalidad de Anatolia Central. Pero Derinkuyu es una excepción, no se ha descubierto aquí ninguna capa que indique un incendio. Aunque ninguna investigación exhaustiva se ha hecho sobre este tema, se puede suponer que los hititas utilizaban las salas de almacenamiento del primer piso como lugar de refugio durante las masacres.

Hay pruebas de que los hititas se asentaron en Anatolia del Sur y Central en el 2000 A.C., hititologos consideran esta raza como de origen indoeuropeo. Aunque no hay pruebas, hasta ahora, de que los frigios vivieran en Derinkuyu, ciertos signos indican que se asentaron en sus proximidades. A una distancia de 4 km de Derinkuyu aldeanos extrajeron artefactos frigios.

Durante el siglo VI D.C, comenzó el conflicto entre los imperios bizantino y árabe, Derinkuyu y sus alrededores fueron fuertemente atacados en tres ocasiones. Como resultado, mucha de la población bizantina encontró cada vez más difícil seguir viviendo escondidos en los asentamientos subterráneos y abandonó la zona.

Después del siglo VII los cristianos fueron capaces de llevar acabo abiertamente la propagación de su religión y algunos de ellos tallaron cientos de iglesias en la roca y "chimeneas de hadas" en la región de Goreme y Soganli, utilizando estos edificios como centros misioneros de la fe cristiana.

A partir del siglo XII Anatolia se encontró bajo la dominación de los turcos selyúcidas. La tolerancia religiosa permitió a los cristianos de la región agregar muchos frescos a sus lugares de oración en Goreme, Ihlara y Soganli. En el siglo XIV, con la aparición del Imperio Otomano, otro éxodo bizantino tuvo lugar y Goreme, Ihlara y Soganli perdieron su importancia.
